    Drawing of the Royal Society’s iron chest standing on its wooden frame and on castors.

    The work is inscribed in pencil: “Iron chest given to RS by Mr. Ball a founder about 1663 for documents Weld’s History VOL. P.171.” With an instruction to the printer: “Reduce to 3 ½ “wide.” Inscribed in pencil lower right: “Butterworth Savoy House 115 Strand”

    Drawn for an article by Herbert Rix (1850-1906), assistant secretary of the Royal Society. The illustration was made to be engraved by the Butterworth and Heath company (active 1856-1896) and published in the Leisure Hour for 1896.
