Description
Map of the northern Atlantic Ocean and Greenland Sea, centred on Greenland, Iceland and Spitzbergen [‘East Greenland’], extending from Prince William’s Land in the west, to Nova Zembla in the east. Showing the annual extent of polar ice in spring and summer.
Plate 19 accompanying the paper ‘On the Greenland or polar ice’, by William Scoresby junior, Memoirs of the Wernerian Natural History Society, v.2 1811-1816, pp.261-338 (Edinburgh, 1818). Inscribed above: ‘PLATE XIX Wern. Mem. Vol.II. p.231’. Inscribed below: ‘Engraved by W & D Lizars Edinr.’ The plate is headed: ‘A MAP of EAST & WEST GREENLAND Comprising the Extent of the GREENLAND SEAS and an outline of the POLAR ICE.’
William Scoresby junior (1789-1857) British Arctic scientist and Church of England clergyman was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1824.
