    Diagram accompanying text predicting the transit of Mercury across the Sun on 25 October 1664 (O.S.). The text presents the calculations of Thomas Streete and Vincent Wing.
    Object history
    The minutes of a Royal Society meeting on 10 February 1664 record, 'Mention being made of the conjunction of Mercury with the sun on the 25th of October following, it was ordered, that Dr. Goddard, Dr. Whistler, Mr. Balle, and Mr. Hooke should prepare for the observation' (Birch, 1:383).
