Description
Half-length portrait of John Mudge, his head in three-quarter profile, looking down to the right. He is dressed in a gown and cap, and appears to be turning the pages of a book. The spines of two other volumes are visible behind and to his right, and a curtain is visible on his left [as viewed].

John Mudge (bap. 1721 - 1793) British surgeon and physician was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1777. He won the Society's Copley Medal that same year for his paper on reflecting telescopes ['Directions for making the best Composition for the Metals for reflecting Telescopes; together with a Description of the Process for Grinding, Polishing, and giving the great Speculum the true Parabolic Curve', Philosophical Transactions Vol. 6].
