Description
A man stands in left profile contemplating a barometer. A scale has been inscribed on the its stem. A window to the man’s left [as viewed] shines light on the instrument, and the beginnings of a garden are visible behind and to his right.
Plate 2 from a German translation of Joachim d’Alence’s Tractatus de barometris…(Ludwig Bourgeat, Mainz, 1688), an early account of meteorological instruments including barometers, thermometers and hygrometers.
Joachim d’Alence (16..-1707) French astronomer and physician was not a Fellow of the Royal Society.
