He wears a white shirt, a black cravat and a grey suit underneath a dark dinner jacker, his hair short with side-whiskers. He leans his elbow across the back of a chair back, its turned handle visible below and his hands in his lap.
Inscribed below: ‘T. H. Maguire 1850’, and ‘D. T. Ansted M &N HANHART LITH PRINTERS’
The portrait formed part of a series titled Portraits of Honorary Members of the Ipswich Museum (1852): lithographic portraits by T. H. Maguire commissioned by George Ransome, founder of the Ipswich Museum.
David Thomas Ansted (1814-1880) British geologist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1844.
