    Sketched depiction of the air pump designed by Robert Boyle, from an engraving of the same by William Faithorne.

    Inscribed below: ‘The Air pump as invented by BOYLE from his portrait by Fairthorne about twice size of this sketch.’

    Robert Boyle (1627–1691), Irish natural philosopher, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663.

    Charles Turnor presented his Collectanea Newtoniana. Being a selection of the most authentic engraved portraits of Sir Isaac Newton Knt., and other eminent Philosophers Mathematicians and Distinguished Men … to the Royal Society in 1837.
