Description
Head and shoulders portrait of Francis Bacon, turned to the left [as viewed], looking directly out at the viewer. With a doublet and dark gown, a white ruff and black hat at a slight angle, his hair long with a moustache. In an oval frame on a pedestal with a cherub holding a mace, various books and manuscripts and a compass below.
Inscribed below: ‘J. Houbraken Sculp. In the Possession of Martin Foulkes Esq.r. Impremis J & P Knapton, Londini 1736’

Charles Turnor presented his Collectanea Newtoniana. Being a selection of the most authentic engraved portraits of Sir Isaac Newton Knt., and other eminent Philosophers Mathematicians and Distinguished Men … to the Royal Society in 1837.
