    Chart of signals to be sent by lanterns, with an inset figure of a private signal box.

    The author of the accompanying article states that: ‘Twenty-five lamps are placed in a frame at equal distances from each other, as represented by the white dots in fig.I No.1 (plate III) each having a movable cover, or blind…’.
