    Description
4 coloured spots surrounded by a complementary tint, simulating the optical effect of Chevreul’s second law of successive contrast. A further illustration shows two bands of juxtaposed colours, demonstrating the modification of one colour when observed next to another.

Plate 3, figures 8-12 to De la loi du contraste simultane des couleurs (The laws of contrast of colour) by Michel Eugene Chevreul (Paris 1839).

    Inscribed ‘H. Legrand sc.’

Michel Eugene Chevreul (1786-1889) French chemist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1826.
