Description
Full length seated portrait of Fontenelle dressed in loose robes and turban holding a quill pen in his right hand, the left arm leaning against a table upon which stands a globe and inkwells.
Inscribed: “Guilleinot del. Chollet sc.” Inscribed in pencil lower left “1732 Bernard le Bouvier de Fontenelle 1657 to 1757”.
Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1732.
