    Description
Zoological studies of the wall lizard referred to by the author as Lacerta muralis, probably Podarcus sicula, the Italian wall lizard (Podarcis muralis is the common wall lizard) of southern Europe, including the island of Capri, Italy. The illustrations show natural variations in patterning. Figure 1 male lizard, elegans. Figure 2 male lizard maculata. Figure 3 female lizard, striata. Figure 4 Female lizard, modesta.

Plate 2 from the monograph Zoologische studien auf Capri...Lacerta muralis coerulea. Ein beitrag zur Darwin’chen lehre, by Theodor Eimer (Wilhelm Engelman, Leipzig, 1874).

The plate is inscribed: “Taf. 2. Gezeichnet, v. A.Eimer. Lith Anst. v. J.G.Bach, Leipzig. Lacerta muralis (Capri). 1. elegans. Männchen. 2. maculata Männchen. 3. striata. Weibchen. 4. modesta. Weibchen.“

Theodor Eimer (1843-1898) was Professor of Zoology at the University of Tubingen and used studies of these lizards to discuss orthogenesis in evolutionary theory. He married Anna Luteroth (b.1851) who is credited on the plate ‘Gezeichnet’ (subscribed).
