Description
Figure of a rhinoceros, ‘arme de toutes pieces’ (with all pieces of armour) viewed from the side.
In discussing the rhinoceros, the author notes that: “Pausanias ecrit, que le Rhinoceros a deux cornes, & non une seule: l'une sur le nez, assez grande, de couleur noire, & de grosseur & longeur de celle d'un Buffle... toute solide, & fort pesante: l'autre luy sort au hault de l'espaule assez petite lais fort aigue.” (Pausanias writes, the Rhinoceros has two horns, and not one: one on the nose, quite big, black, & length & size of that of a buffalo...solid, and very heavy: the other at the shoulder, small, strong and sharp).
Illustration from Discours d'Ambroise Pare ... a scavoir, de la mumie, de la licorne, des venins, et de la peste, avec une table des plus notables matieres contenues esdit discours (chez Gabriel Buon, Paris, 1582), f.24.
