Plate 1 from Mecanique celeste. By the Marquis de la Place...translated, with a commentary, by Nathaniel Bowditch volume 4 (Boston, 1839). Inscribed below: “Engraved by G.F. Storm from an unfinished painting in the possession of the family – the last work of Stuart. Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1838 by H.I.Bowditch in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of Massachusetts.” With a facsimile signature.
Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) American mathematician was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1818.
