Description
Zoological study of an Indian palm squirrel, or three-striped squirrel Funambulus palmarum. Side view, posed on a tree branch.
Plate 1 from The zoological miscellany; being a description of new, or interesting animals, by William Elford Leach, volume 1 (London, 1815). The author describes the animal within the text: “This animal was taken in the young state in a library at Madras, where the old one had formed a nest in a large book, into which she had perforated. It was brought alive to England, and was kept some time by Mr. Carlisle, who, after its death, gave it to Mr Sowerby...”
The plate is inscribed: “Drawn Engraved & Published by Rd. P. Nodder Jany. 1814.”
William Elford Leach (1790-1836) British naturalist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1816.
