Description
Ornithological study of the Oriole blackbird Gymnomystax mexicanus, native to South America. Side view, posed on a tree branch.
Plate 2 from The zoological miscellany; being a description of new, or interesting animals, by William Elford Leach, volume 1 (London, 1815). The author describes the bird within the text: “This specimen...was killed at St. Andrew’s, in Jamaica, by Mr. John Wiles, who most obligingly permitted me to examine it, and at the same time informed me that it was very common in that district...”
The plate is inscribed: “Drawn Engraved & Published by R. P. Nodder January 1814.”
William Elford Leach (1790-1836) British naturalist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1816.
