Description
Ornithological study of a bird described by the author as Lanius obscurus, the dusky shrike. Side view, posed on a tree branch.
Plate 21 from The zoological miscellany; being a description of new, or interesting animals, by William Elford Leach, volume 1 (London, 1815). The author describes the bird within the text: “Place [of origin] unknown. Figured from the specimen in the British Museum, which was described by Dr. Latham many years ago; no other specimen having occurred, and the bird being unknown to ornithologists...”
The plate is inscribed: “Drawn Engraved & Published by R. P. Nodder Tavistock Street. 1814.”
William Elford Leach (1790-1836) British naturalist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1816.
