Description
Marine zoological studies (front and rear views) of the shell Strombus pugilis (here named Strombus sloanii) from the Caribbean and South American coasts.
Plate 22 from The zoological miscellany; being a description of new, or interesting animals, by William Elford Leach, volume 1 (London, 1815). The author describes the shells within the text: “This shell has been considered as an accidental variety of Strombus Pugilis; but I cannot accede to this opinion, although it is entertained by some eminent conchologists.”
The plate is inscribed: “Drawn Engraved & Published by R. P. Nodder Tavistock St. London.”
William Elford Leach (1790-1836) British naturalist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1816.
