    Description
    Landscape showing the front face of old Royal Observatory building (now known as Flamsteed House) at Greenwich set upon a hill and viewed from below. The stepped approach to the observatory appears on the left of the print, with avenues of trees leading from it; and to the right, below the building. Several figures inhabit the scene including children playing at the foot of the hill and a gentleman directly facing the viewer.

    Plate 8 from Ichnographia speculae Regiae Grenovici exquisite facta (London, 1676) a series of engravings commissioned by Sir Jonas Moore, the leading force in the construction and equipping of the original Royal Greenwich Observatory. The plate bears the inscription: “FACIES SPECULAE SEPTEN:”

    Sir Jonas Moore (1617-1679) mathematician and patron of astronomy was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1674.
