Plate illustrates Hauksbee’s introduction (pp.1-4) to his book, entitled ‘A General Description of the Air-Pump made use of in the following Experiments’.
Plate I from Physico-mechanical experiments on various subjects, by Francis Hauksbee (London, 1709), presented to the Royal Society by the author on 26 October 1709.
Hauksbee (ca.1660 – 1713) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1705, and was the Society’s Curator of Experiments from 1703 to 1713.
