Frontispiece of the book Musaeum Regalis Societatis; or, A catalogue and description of the natural and artificial rarities belonging to the Royal Society, and preserved at Gresham Colledge, by Nehemiah Grew (second printing: London, 1686).

Daniel Colwall was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663, he served as its Treasurer from 1666 to 1679.

The Royal Society’s museum collection, or Repository, was established in the 1660s. In 1666 a donation from Daniel Colwall enabled the Society to add to the Repository a collection of ‘natural rarities’ which had been on public display in London near St Paul’s Cathedral. The first catalogue of the Repository was produced by Nehemiah Grew in 1681, and featured a portrait of Colwall as its frontispiece; the catalogue was reissued in 1686 and 1694.
