Plate 3 from Memoires pour server a l’histoire d’un genre de polypes d’eau douce...by Abraham Trembley (Leiden, 1744).
The plate is inscribed: “P. Lyonet delin. J. v. Schley sculp. 1743.”
The Swiss natural historian Abraham Trembley (1710-1784) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1743. His book, from which this plate is taken, gives an account of experiments with freshwater hydra, or polyps. The Dutch entomologist Pierre Lyonet (1706-1789) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1748.
