Description
Plan, elevation and section of a wheel-driven 36-foot length lifeboat; with dimensions, an explanatory key and scale of 1 inch: 4 feet.
Plate 11 from the book Improvements in naval architecture, by Oliver Lang (Woolwich, 1853).
The plate is headed ‘LIFE BOAT CXI.’ and is inscribed ‘H.W.Hampton Del. Day & Son, Lithrs. To the Queen.’
The accompanying text states that the author “designed a life boat on an entirely new principle and plan from any yet seen; housed over, with ventilation, &c., propelled by wheels, and to steer at both ends, each steerman is secured in the life boat with water-tight canvass round his waist...this boat will be safe, dry, and easily managed, always ready for immediate use, and requiring only ten or twelve men, who can run her off the beach into the serf with the greatest facility...”:
Oliver Lang (1777-1853) was a master shipwright at the Royal Naval Dockyard at Woolwich.
