Half length portrait of James Holman posed with his left hand on a writing block and stylus resting upon a table, right hand on a globe. Behind the sitter is a view [or painting?] of a naval scene.
Inscribed below: ‘Fabroni Pinxt. R.Cooper sculp.’ With an excerpt: “...the book of knowledge fair/Presented with an universal blank/Of nature’s works, to me expung’d and ras’d/And wisdom at one entrance quite shut out. MILTON.”
