Full length studio portrait of William Cavendish standing with his left hand resting upon a chair back, a sheaf of papers in his right hand. Compton faces to the left as viewed, where there is a heavily carved bookcase with a parianware bust, books and a framed portrait.

William Cavendish was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1829.
