Landscape view of the harbour at Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands, with sailing vessels.

John Barrow’s voyage to southern Vietnam (Cochinchina) was undertaken as the preliminary to Lord Macartney’s Embassy to China. Their small squadron of vessels, HMS Lion, the Indiaman Hindostan and the brig Jackal, are most likely the vessels shown in this scene flying British flags.
John Barrow (1764-1848) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1805.
