    Zoological study of the Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) the freshwater reptile native to South-East Asia. With three details of the head, snout and jaw.

    The accompanying text reads: ‘La figure du plus grand des trois Crocodiles est representée assez au natural dans la posture où il estoit avant qu’on l’ouvrist...’ [The figure of the largest of the three Crocodiles is properly represented in its natural posture as it was before he was opened].

    Plate 1 from the book Observations physiques et mathematiques, pour servir a l'histoire naturelle & a la perfection de l'astronomie & de la geographie, envoyees de Siam...by Pere Gouye (Paris, 1688). The description of the Siamese crocodile was facilitated by Constantine Phaulkon or Falcon (1647-1688) prime minister to the Siamese King.
