Description
Anatomical study of the human trachea, larynx and thyroid.
Unpublished illustration, figure 2 from the manuscript version of the paper “On the function of the thyroid body” by Peter Martyn, the text abstracted in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, vol.8 (1856-1857), pp.315-318.
The sketch is inscribed ‘The Larynx & Trachea, with Thyroid body in situ on the right side. The Straight lines shewing the direction of the larygical Muscles’. A note appended to the paper text by the author states that: ‘n.b. the drawings are not very good, but I think correct; done by myself & from memory’.
Peter Martyn was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was a naval surgeon aboard HMS Powerful stationed in the Gulf of Mexico in February 1856 when this illustration was made.
