Description
Anatomical studies of the human thyroid and larynx with comparative sections of musical instruments, including organ pipes, French horn, base horn, clarinet, flute and musical box.
Unpublished illustrations, figures 3-13 from the manuscript version of the paper “On the function of the thyroid body” by Peter Martyn, the text abstracted in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, vol.8 (1856-1857), pp.315-318.
The sketches are individually inscribed with captions. A note appended to the paper text by the author states that: ‘n.b. the drawings are not very good, but I think correct; done by myself & from memory’.
Peter Martyn was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was a naval surgeon aboard HMS Powerful stationed in the Gulf of Mexico in February 1856 when this illustration was made.
