    Anatomical study of the brain and associated region of Lumbricus terrestris, the common earthworm.

    Unpublished illustration, figure (pencilled ‘Fig.8’) from the manuscript version of the paper “The nervous system of Lumbricus terrestris” by J. Lockhart Clarke, the text abstracted in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, vol.8 (1856-1857), pp.343-351.

    The sketch is inscribed in ink above: ‘Brain or cephalic ganglion, with pharyngeal collar, pharyngeal chain, and first subventral ganglion’; and below ‘Drawn from nature by the Author’.

    Jacob Augustus Lockhart Clarke (1817-1880) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1854.
