Description
Anatomical study of a marine specimen of Tridacna, a giant clam from the Pacific Ocean. The specimen is seen from above with the shell removed.
This bivalve mollusc was described by the author aboard HMS Herald in March 1857 as the vessel was engaged in surveying work in the south-western Pacific. The author, John Denis Macdonald was assistant surgeon on the ship.

Sir John Denis Macdonald was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1859.
