    Description
Landscape view of the Austro-Hungarian Arctic Expedition’s log-built meteorological station for wind measurement, with below it the boathouse with two small craft visible. Above the cabin is a flagpole. To the left of the boathouse, a sledge and a two-wheeled limber. Expedition members are posed around the buildings and equipment and a dog is curled up at the entrance to the boathouse. The expedition was based on Jan Mayen, the Arctic volcanic island of Norway and was part of the first International Polar Year, 1882-1883.

Plate 4 from the portfolio Photographische Aufnahmen von der Insel Jan Mayen; Oesterreichischen Polar-Expedition, 1882-1883 (Wien, 1884). Original photographs are credited to Linienschiffs-Lieutenant Richard Basso.

Inscribed left: ‘Graf Wilcz-ek’sche Polar-Expedition 1882/83’; and right ‘Linienschiffslieutenant Basso phg.’ Below, the main title: ‘Jan Mayen. Blockhaus fur Windmess-Apparate un Bootshaus.’
