    Description
View of a dead seal, hunted by members of the Austro-Hungarian Arctic Expedition on Jan Mayen, the volcanic island of Norway. The image shows the animal displayed on a makeshift table constructed of barrels and planking in front of a canvas sheet. An expedition member is standing to one side, brandishing a harpoon. Camp huts can be seen behind. The expedition was part of the first International Polar Year, 1882-1883.

Plate 5 from the portfolio Photographische Aufnahmen von der Insel Jan Mayen; Oesterreichischen Polar-Expedition, 1882-1883 (Wien, 1884). Original photographs are credited to Linienschiffs-Lieutenant Richard Basso.

Inscribed left: ‘Graf Wilcz-ek’sche Polar-Expedition 1882/83’; and right ‘Linienschiffslieutenant Basso ph.’ Below, the main title: ‘Jan Mayen. Erlegter Seehund.’
