    Landscape view of a beach on Jan Mayen with driftwood and whale bones. Two dogs are curled up in the foreground and the Austro-Hungarian Arctic Expedition’s ship, the Pola can be seen behind. The expedition was part of the first International Polar Year, 1882-1883. Jan Mayen had been used as a whaling base since the seventeenth century.
