    Description
    Elevation of the first working lighthouse to be illuminated by coal gas, constructed at Salvore near Trieste, now Savudrija, Croatia. The gas-producing plant was designed by Giovanni Aldini, producing illumination from 1818.

    Not signed. Inscribed “Finale di Trieste alla punta di Salvore il primo Illuminato a gas.” With two scales, metric and ‘klaster’ [fathoms].

    Giovanni Aldini (1762-1834) Italian physicist, is best-known for his experiments in galvanism but was also a pioneer in the field of lighthouse engineering.
