    Half-length portraits of: (standing, left to right) A A Campbell Swinton; G K B Elphinstone; Sidney George Brown; and George Forbes; with (sitting, left to right) Major P A MacMahon; P O Pederson; and Sir William Crookes. All are dressed in evening wear and appear against an office background with an electric light visible above. Brown is smoking a cigar.

    The reverse has a paper label inscribed in ink with the names of the sitters and the date, ‘1913’. Lightly inscribed in pencil: ‘1851/2 & pattern’.

    Alan Archibald Campbell-Swinton was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1915.
    Sir George Keith Buller Elphinstone was Managing Director of Elliott Brothers, instrument makers.
    Sidney George Brown was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1916.
    George Forbes was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1887.
    Percy Alexander MacMahon was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1890.
    Peder Oluf Pedersen was a Danish electrical engineer.
    Sir William Crookes was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1863 and served as President 1913-1915.
