Description
Full length portrait of Macdonald in army uniform with a cocked hat and sword.
Inscribed: “DIGHTON 1812 Lieut, Gen. Macdonald.” Stamped lower centre and pencilled “1800” but struck through.
Probably collected in error. Formerly supposed to be John MacDonald (1759-1831) Scottish military engineer and cartographer, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1800. However this officer did not attain the rank of Lieutenant General. The National Portrait gallery recognises the image as being of Donald MacDonald (d.1812) of the Westmoreland 55th Regiment of Foot.
Provenance: Noted in Catalogue of the prints in the possession of the Royal Society, by Henry George Plimmer FRS (1856-1918), manuscript, p.43.
