    Description
    Half-length portrait of Johannes Jacobus Scheuchzerus, turned to the right and looking straight at viewer. He wears jacket, open collared shirt, and cape [?] draped aross right arm. Mountain with goats and waterfall in the background with minerals, shells, fossil, and coral on table in foregound. Right arm rests on table, with thistle in hand.

    Possibly used as a frontispiece to Scheuchzerus' Itinera alpina tria, which was published in London in 1708 and dedicated to the Royal Society.

    Inscribed 'Melchior Fusslinus Tigur. pinx. Jos. Nutting Lond. Sculp.t. JOHANNES JACOBUS SCHEUCHZERUS, Med D Helvetio-Tigurinus SOC. Reg: Lond. Et ACAD Nat. Gur. Dictus ACARNAN Nat. IV. Non Aug. 1672’ and pencilled ‘1703’.

    Johannes Jacobus Scheuchzerus was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1703.
