    Head and shoulders portrait of John Stuart, turned slightly to the right as viewed and looking off to the left. He wears fur trimmed cape tied with ribbon bow at the neck. In an oval frame.

    Inscribed ‘Painted by T Gainsborough. Engraved by Caroline Watson Engraver to her Majesty. John Earl of Bute. published according to Act of Parliament June 13 1791’ and pencilled ‘1799’.

    John Stuart was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1799.
