    Description
    Three quarter length portrait of William Withering, seated against draped fabric background and looking off to the right as viewed. Left arm resting on a table against open book and holding foxglove [?] in lap. He wears high collared jacket, waistcoat, culottes, knotted cravat, and wig tied at the back.

    Inscribed ‘1785, W Withering MD[?] FRS’.

    William Withering was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1785.
