Presented by the sitter’s son. The portrait was commissioned from Hermann Hirsch of Bremke, near Göttingen and brought to the United Kingdom in 1933, remaining within the Born family. The work was owned by Professor Gustav Born FRS, the son of Max Born, until its transfer to the Royal Society.
