    Head and shoulders portrait of Max Born as Professor of Physics at Göttingen University, Germany. Born is presented looking to the left as viewed. His left elbow rests upon a table surface, and he leans his head slightly with his left hand against his cheek. Born wears a dark, near black jacket with a white shirt and maroon tie.

    Donation: Presented by Professor Gustav Born FRS, 2015.

    Presented by the sitter’s son. The portrait was commissioned from Hermann Hirsch of Bremke, near Göttingen and brought to the United Kingdom in 1933, remaining within the Born family. The work was owned by Professor Gustav Born FRS, the son of Max Born, until its transfer to the Royal Society.
