Description
Full length portrait of James Edward Oglethorpe, seated in right profile, holding book in left hand. He wears knee length coat, breeches, frilled shirt, and tricorne hat.
Inscribed ‘Etched by S. P[?]. Gent Oglethorpe, aged 102. Sketched at Dr. Johnson. Sale June 30 1785. Vide pennant. Published by CG Dyer Soho’ and pencilled ‘1749’.
James Edward Oglethorpe was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1749.
