Half-length portrait of Thomas Joseph Pettigrew, seated in an armchair, resting book on his knee.
Inscribed ‘H.Room. W & F Holl. facsimile signature F.R.S. F.S.A. F.L.S. WHITTAKER, & Co. AVE MARIA LANE, 1840’ and pencilled ‘1827’.
Thomas Joseph Pettigrew was not a Fellow of the Royal Society, he was a surgeon and antiquarian who became an expert on Ancient Egyptian mummies.
