Half-length portrait of Edward Riou, turned slightly to the left as viewed and looking directly to viewer. He wears military jacket with epaulettes and white necktie.
Inscribed ‘From the Miniature by Shelley. Engraved by Jas Heath A.R.A. CAPTN. EDWD. RIOU. Commander of the Guardian Frigate in the year 1789 but (late of His Majesty’s Ship Amazon.) who fell gloriously in the Attack of the Danish Fleet and Batteries off Copenhagen April 2nd 1801. Published May 28 1801 by Sl Shelley. George Street Hanover Square and J Heath No.15 Russell Pace Fitzroy Square.’ and pencilled ‘1796’.
Edward Riou was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1796.
