    Study of William Crookes in his private laboratory at 7 Kensington Gardens, London. Crookes is shown standing, half-turned, holding a pen above a large laboratory notebook.

    Pasted on an ivory card backing. Inscribed below in ink: ‘William Crookes. Xmas, 1900’.

    Sir William Crookes (1832-1919) British chemist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1863. He served as President of the Royal Society in 1913-1915.
