Spectral lines from the Sun, together with lines for the chemical elements Magnesium, Nitrogen and Lead. The images were obtained using a Steinheil spectroscope, prisms and telescopes at varying magnifications.
Plate from the manuscript version of the paper ‘On the chief line in the spectrum of the nebulae’, by J. Norman Lockyer, Proceedings of the Royal Society, vol.48 (1890), pp.167-198. The illustration was printed as figure 1 in the published paper.
The image has a pencilled reduction at the left and right sides. Annotated in pencil: ‘To be engraved the exact size, so as to fill the page. It must not be reduced in length’.
