Description
Anatomical diagrams showing the disposition of the chief nerves and ganglia in scorpions. Figure 2 is based upon the anatomy of Androctonus funestus (Androctonus australis). Figure 3 indicates the main features of Scorpio cyaneus, and other tropical species. Figure 4 is reproduced from Leon Dufour’s description of the European and North African yellow scorpion Buthus occitanus, here designated Androctonus occitanus.
Illustrations from the manuscript version of the paper ‘Note of the differences in the position of the ganglia of the central nerve-cord in three species of scorpion’, by E.Ray Lankester, Proceedings of the Royal Society, vol.34 (1882), pp.101-104. The published paper reproduced the image as figures 2-4.
Inscribed below with figure numbers. The drawing was submitted on the same sheet as an illustration for the paper ‘On the coxal glands of Scorpio hitherto undescribed and corresponding to the brick-red glands of Limulus’, also by Ray Lankester.
Sir Edwin Ray Lankester (1847-1929) was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1875.
