    Half-length portrait of James Edward Smith, seated and holding plant spring in left hand. He wears regency-style clothing of frock coat, waistcoat and cravat.

    Inscribed ‘Gent. Mag. April 1828. Pl. I p.297. Audinet Sculp. Sir J E Smith. Knt. M.D. F.R.S. Pres. L.S. &c &c. Born 1759- Died 1828. Published by J.B. Nichols & Son. May 1. 1828 ’ and pencilled ‘1785’.

    Sir James Edward Smith was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1785.
