Description
Natural history study of the short beaked echidna Tachyglossus aculeatus (here referred to as Echidna hystrix). This female specimen, shown from below (ventral view) was captured on Kangaroo Island and transported to Adelaide, Australia for dissection after egg-laying.
Plate 1 from the manuscript version of the paper ‘On the Marsupial Ovum, the Mammary Pouch, and the Male Milk Glands of Echidna hystrix’, by Wilhelm Haacke, Proceedings of the Royal Society, v.38 (1884), pp.72-74. The illustration was not printed in the published account.
The accompanying text states that: ‘Pl I is intended to give a good idea of the mammary pouch in which the egg was found. The tufts of hair indicating the mammary aeolae are particularly to be observed. ¼ natural size, the specimen having been 40cm long’. Inscribed above ‘I’ and below ‘C.Eggert del., Haacke direxit’
Johann Wilhelm Haacke (1855-1912) German zoologist was Director of the Natural History Museum in Adelaide, 1882-1884.
