    Description
Panorama of Lisbon, ‘a true and accurate illustration of the main and residential town of Lisbon in the Kingdom Portugal as it appeared before the earthquake on 1 November 1755…’ With inset views of the Belem Tower and Ribeira Palace.

Plate from the monograph Allgemeine und besondere Geschicht-beschreibung der merkwurdigsten Kluffte und Erdbeben ausfuhrlich und zuverlassig mit ihren Ursachen, Absichten und Wurkungen, von den altesten biss auf unsere Zeiten bey dem fast volligen Untergang der Stadt Lissabon und mehrerer Stadte in Portugall und den mitternachtigen Theilen von Africa (Christoph Melchior Roth, Nuremburg, 1756).

The map has a main heading with a key below noting thirty-five major buildings and landmarks. Inscribed lower right: ‘Nürnberg zufinden bey Christoph. Melchior Roth’.

Lisbon was almost completely destroyed by earthquake and subsequent fires and tsunami on 1 November 1755 with a huge loss of life. This illustration shows the city as a major European capital before that event.

Christopher Melchior Roth (1720-1798) German printmaker with interests in cartography.
